Which cat litter doesn't track all over the house?

The least litter ends up around your home when it's made of coarse pellets that don't stick to paws and don't crumble when your cat digs. Fine clay or sand-like litter, on the other hand, gets stuck between the toe beans and travels all the way into your bed. Here's why litter leaves the box in the first place – and what actually helps.
- Pellets instead of fine granules that barely stick to paws
- Firm clumps that don't crumble on the scoop
- 3–5 cm (1–2 in) of litter is enough – less to kick out
„In 14 years of sharing my home with cats, I've never had so little litter lying around!“
Why does cat litter end up all over the house?
Most of the time, the granules hitch a ride on your cat's paws. On top of that, some litter flies over the edge when your cat digs or jumps out. Three things decide how much of it reaches your hallway, bathroom and bed.
How do you spot litter that stays in the box?
Which type of litter tracks the least?
Here's how the four most common types of litter compare when it comes to litter around the house.

Comparison based on typical properties of each litter type; individual products may differ. See all criteria in our cat litter comparison.
What TOFU does differently
TOFU checks all three boxes. You'll notice it the next time you walk down the hallway in socks.
Pellets that stay put
TOFU cat litter is made of pressed pellets from pea and soy fiber and corn. They're longer and softer than clay granules and don't fit between the toe beans. Your cat steps out of the box, and the litter stays inside.
„I'm thrilled!! No more litter around the house. No crumbling on the scoop.“ – Susan M., Germany

Clumps that hold together
TOFU binds urine into firm clumps you can lift out in one go. No damp crumbs are left behind to stick to paws and dry onto the floor later.

Less in the box, less around it
With TOFU, 3–5 cm (1–2 in) of litter is enough. We fill to about 5 cm (2 in), and if it drops a little after scooping, that's fine. Less litter in the box also means less litter flying over the edge when your cat digs.
„Regular litter needs to be 7–10 cm deep; with this litter, 3–5 cm is plenty.“ – Leonie A., Germany

For the last bits: the LOOMAT litter mat
The double-layer LOOMAT catches whatever still clings to paws after a trip to the box. It ships without a fold and lies flat from day one. Together with TOFU, the floor around the box stays clean.

FAQ about litter around the house
Which cat litter doesn't track all over the house?
Litter made of coarse pellets that clumps firmly and barely makes dust tracks the least. Plant-based clumping litter like TOFU does all of that. Fine clay or silica litter, on the other hand, easily gets stuck between the toe beans. See the cat litter comparison
Why does my cat always have litter on its paws?
Fine granules settle between the toe beans and in the fur on the paws when your cat digs. Damp crumbs from clumps that fall apart stick on top of that. It's especially noticeable with long-haired cats. Coarse pellets and a firmly clumping litter usually solve the problem.
Does a hooded litter box help with scattered litter?
A hood or high sides catch what flies up when your cat digs. They don't help with litter on the paws, because your cat carries that out when it steps out of the box. For that, the litter itself and a mat at the exit make the difference.
How much litter should go in the box?
With TOFU, 3–5 cm (1–2 in) is enough. Fill to about 5 cm (2 in), scoop out the clumps every day and top up when the layer drops well below 3 cm (1 in). With fine clay litter, 7–10 cm (3–4 in) is often recommended, which gives your cat that much more to kick out.
Can a robot vacuum pick up scattered cat litter?
A robot vacuum usually picks up dry pellets well. Remove damp bits or clumps by hand first so nothing gets smeared. The easiest option is to keep much litter from landing in front of the box in the first place.
Why is there still some litter in front of the box with TOFU?
A litter box with nothing at all in front of it is rare. Vigorous diggers send the odd pellet over the edge, and long-haired cats can carry a little out now and then. A litter mat right at the exit catches the rest.
How do I switch my cat to TOFU?
Mix TOFU into the usual litter gradually over about 10 days until there's only TOFU left in the box. Most cats accept it without any trouble this way. See the step-by-step guide
